6 Basic Parts Of A Milling Machine That You Should Understand
Some of the basic components that a milling machine has, are the head, motor, spindle, drive system, quill, and the worktable.
Filing metal components consistently was done by milling machines in the early 1800?s. Very few modifications and improvements were made to the rudimentary form of the milling machine, however in 1861, the device was revolutionized by Brown & Sharpe to travel in the X, Y and Z axis. In the 1980’s, various processes of the milling machine was automated by integration of computer technology with the machine. It also improved operational accuracy and consistency. Over the years, milling machines have become a staple of machine shops and are used for many operations. Whether a spindle repair should be made or any other maintenance work is necessary can be determined by operators by checking the machine regularly. It is good to have an understanding of the different parts of the milling machine so that its operation, handling and maintenance can be properly made.
Head
The head is the main top component of manual milling machine. To find the spindle and motor, look in this part. The head has the job of transforming electrical power to mechanical energy which is used for the spindle.
Motor
The spindle receives the necessary electric power generated by the motor. The spindle is rotated by the belt-driven system when it operates. Depending on the gear being used, the speed of the rotation can vary between the range of 50 and beyond 4000 RPM.
Spindle
The cutting tool is connected to the spindle. If you make some changes in the spindle, it can be made to turn in any direction.
Drive system
The head can be found in the drive system. It also allows the rotational speed of the spindle and subsequently the cutting mechanism to be altered by the milling machine operator.
Quill
The component that keeps the spindle in place is known as quill. Its movement follows an upward and downward direction and may be controlled using the quill feed. You can use the quill feed’s hand wheel to move the quill up and down. The quill also has a lock in which a number of materials may be cut with the same depth at a time.
Work table
Put the production pieces on the work surface. This comes with slot components to hook all of the pieces together. The X, Y or Z direction is used to move the production, on the work table. The X direction is a left to right horizontal movement. The Z direction is for movement up and down, while the Y direction is for movement from the front to the back. During the cutting process, the work table has several configurations in which it can be modified to improve flexibility. The component that allows the worktable to be moved horizontally from left to right and vice versa, is the longitudinal traverse hand wheel. Then again, you may use the traverse hand wheel as a way of moving your work table both in and out. Using the vertical movement crank, milling machine parts, such as the saddle and knee, may be moved upward and downward, along with the worktable.
Because of their technical significance, the different parts of milling machines need to be maintained properly and repairs should be made immediately when needed.
