Need help selecting the proper air compressor?

I have a small home shop and i am in the market for a new air compressor, however i know very little about them. I am on my second upright portable air compressor and i have decided to replace it with a much larger unit. I know i want a vertical unit but other than that i am at a loss. There are single stage, two stage units, peak horsepower, running horse power, cfm, and psi ratings and i don't know what i should get. I don't use air tools alot but, when i do i use alot of them. I have a mill and a lathe and i am wanting to add a power drawbar to the mill and an air powered collet system to the lathe. I also have a 90 pound sandblaster. I think i would prefer a belt drive unit as i currently have a direct drive model and it is quite loud. Any advice would be appreciated.

judging by your question you don't want to run out of air in the middle of project. how many cfm does the your current compressor put out? i know for a fact cfm is main the concern and there are different approaches in getting that. i wouldn't settle for less than 35 so here's something to consider, these are the best and i would even consider building a shed out side just for it. with adequet ventilation of course. http://www.bing.com/search?q=35cfm+air+compressor&form=CPDTDF&pc=CPDTDF&src=IE-SearchBox
