For All Of You Who Never Did Carpentry – Get To Know Drill Bits For Wood
The more ordinary types of drill bits which one will find in usage are drill bits for wood. Drill bits for wood are more frequently used because a lot more folks do some sort of carpentry or repair wooden objects than metal and other materials. If you think about the fact that woodwork has always been an activity which boys have been involved in during school hours and recently girls have also been allowed the occasion to study carpentry at school and therefore it is not just guys who know about and use drill bits for wood.
Assuming however that you are not one of those people who did much woodwork at school I will give you the very basics on what you need to know about drills and drill bits for wood. With this new knowledge you will feel more secure when making your way around the hardware store and you will be able to get to work fixing what needs to be fixed around the house. You can fix your wardrobe, build a bookshelf, build a toy box, or fix a wooden frame. The possibilities are endless.
Drills
As you know a drill is a machine which is used to drill holes into surfaces. The drill machine itself just gives the force to drill the hole but the actual cutter is called a drill bit. The drill bit is attached to the end of the drill by the chuck. The chuck is the part which rotates the drill bit. When speaking about drill bits for wood, it simply means drill bits which are designed in such a way to cut through wood. Each material will have a drill bit which is designed to cut that type of material best.
Drill bit designs
As I mentioned a drill bit for wood has a different design than other types of drill bits. Wood is a softer material and therefore the thread of the drill bit is different. Before I explain the difference between a drill bit for wood and other drill bits let me explain what a drill bit looks like.
Imagine a screw with an angled edge. This is a basic drill bit but a drill bit can really have a number of edges, which would include a lip angle and a point angle. Drill bits are either made of High Speed Steel (HSS) or Carbon Steel and can be coated to make them last longer.
All purpose drill bits which can be used to drill holes into a number of surfaces are called twist bits.
Spur point drill bits are used exclusively on woods. They have a central point on the one end of the drill bit, with two spur on each side which facilitate the straight drilling of holes.
Another type of drill bit for wood is the flat wood bit. This bit looks like a spade with a point in the centre. It is the point which steadies the bit and the spade which cuts away at the wood. They are used when needing to drill larger holes.
How workable is hardend resin?
I'd like to know if a block of hardend resin, used for encasing memorables , can be turned/milled on a large or mill. If so giving the type of chisel/cutter (HSS/HM) and speeds used would be much appreciated.
*large = lathe
I don't know what cutter you need, but I do know that resin is basically plastic and plastic can get turned on a lathe. However, if you want the resin to stay transparent I think it would be very difficult as the surface will get opaque if you work it on a lathe (or saw it or anything of that kind). You would have to polish it with increasing finer grit of sandpaper and finally some polishing compound in order to get it transparent, and that is going to be much more difficult to impossible with a complicated surface structure. It would be much easier to make a mold which already has the shape you want to the resin in and pour the resin to harden into the desired shape.
