Woodworking Projects That Are Simple But Stunning
A lathe is a great piece of machinery for the woodworker who wants beautiful results but has limited space to work in. With a little practice, you can make showpiece furniture with your lathe.
For starters, why not try making wood bar stools. Tapered legs look great and are easy to turn, as are the stretchers. If you want, you can make the seat on your lathe. As your skills improve, you can move on to more complex turnings.
To make tapered legs, all you have to do is offset the bottom of the leg. Because it is not centered on the pin, it will wobble, so you need to take care when you start rough gouging. Nip away at the wood slowly rather than trying to take it off in big chunks. Also, you will have to set your chisel rest a little further away from the material than is normally safe, so take extra precautions as you work.
By the time you have finished your first set of four wooden bar stools, you will have made sixteen legs and will already be proficient at turning them. If you like, you can put them back on the lathe and add some custom touches.
Don't forget to turn the tops of the legs to the diameter of your dowel holes. Usually that's around three quarters of an inch or 18 mm. Use your calipers to determine the diameter. Check regularly and stop as soon as the calipers just clear the timber. It's a lot easier to trim off a bit more wood than it is to add more later.
You will then need to turn your stretchers. These can be straight or you can taper them at both ends. If you taper them, your calipers will come in handy to ensure that they are of equal diameter at the ends.
Now that everything is turned and ready for assembly, you are ready for the hardest part of the job - putting your stools together. Because the legs are splayed, first you will have to determine the best angle for them. A full-sized scale drawing can help you visualize the ideal angle. Next, you will need to make a jig for your drill press to make sure the holes are all at the perfect angle. Make some tests holes in scrap wood first.
Woodworking, like any other craft, is a matter of practice. It's a good idea to start off with fairly easy projects and work your way up to more complex pieces. You will be surprised how quickly you will improve. Soon you will be making better modern bar stools than you can buy in the store!
Electric Drill press?
I see electric drill press ad's and of course different sizes are available. There are 10",12"16" etc. what specifically are these measurements refering to ?
The size of a drill press is measured in terms of swing. Swing is twice the throat distance, which is the distance from the center of the chuck to the closest edge of the post. For example, a 16-inch drill press will have an 8-inch throat distance.
Style and Variety the Pavilion of Art and Design New York (thepoliticker.observer)
At a press preview yesterday for the Pavilion of Art and Design, the popular
fair from London and Paris that begins its first year in New York at the Park
Avenue Armory on Thursday, the first thing you see is a piece of text printed
on the wall of L&M Gallery’s booth, right by the entrance. It is from Louise
Bourgeois: “It is a great privilege to be able to work with, and I suppose
work off, my feelings through sculpture.” This is hardly a mistake. A catalog
introduction for the fair, penned by _Observer_ columnist and collector Adam
Lindemann, discusses the misunderstandings and “serious confusion” of design,
formerly known as the “decorative arts,” as its collecting field continues to
grow. The text about sculpture is fitting; in this eclectic fair that fills
the massive drill hall at the Armory, many pieces walk the line between
functional domestic piece and art object.
