Understanding Spanners And Wrenches - ToolsRUs
Available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and made for specific tasks, spanners and wrenches are similar in terms of their overall function. So as not to cause any damage to hardware, having the right tool for the job is absolutely necessary. An improperly fitting tool will be ineffective at best or ruin the flats of the nut or bolt at worst. Spanners may be fixed or adjustable, whereas wrenches can always be adjusted. For each specifically sized nut and bolt head, there is the correct spanner. Adjustable wrenches and spanners are suitable for use on a range of fastener sizes.
Some products Chainsaw Files, Impact Drivers, Hook Wrenches
For both types of tools, quality construction is a must. For most fastening applications, chrome vanadium or carbon-forged steel tools provide all the torque you need, so they are the best materials. The open-ended spanner is the most common. This type of spanner consists of a shaft with one or two working ends. Double-ended spanners make the most sense, for you get two different sizes with one tool. Each head is angled about 15 degrees off the shaft, letting you reach multiple flat edges of a nut. In cramped spaces, this can be especially useful.
Ring spanners feature enclosed heads with either 6 or 12 interior points. More versatile are 12-point spanners, for they can fasten onto both hexagonal and square bolts or nuts. On the downside, you'll more easily round the flats of a hex nut with a 12-point ring spanner, while the 6-point variety locks onto a hex nut perfectly. You get more leverage with 6-point tools, but the size of the spanner and the size of nut must match. Ring spanners are stronger than the open-ended type, but they are somewhat limited in terms of access. Among the other types available are bulldog, box, tap, offset ring, split ring and adjustable spanners.
Wrenches are used to tighten nuts and bolts and to tighten, turn or loosen pipe. Unlike adjustable spanners, a pipe wrench has serrated jaws to get a better grip on a pipe. Other types of pipe wrenches include Stilson, strap, footprint and mole wrenches. These provide varying amounts of pressure onto pipes with different diameters. Torque wrenches tighten nuts and bolts to precise specifications and often work in conjunction with sockets. Torque wrenches are most commonly used by mechanics. Spanners and wrenches are each suited to a particular task according to their size, shape and how much precision tightening is necessary.
Can you retap and already installed helicoil.?
The threads on my 00 Grand am Cylinder head, for the rocker arms came out. So I went and got a helicoil. It fit on the bolt but once I got it in it seemed to have shrunk a little. Now my rocker arm wont thread on. Could I possibly use a tap the size of my bolt and slightly enlarge the helicoil without damaging the threads? Please help I dont have money for a new head.
no you cant tap it...but u can try...and if it will not work....take it out and try another coil...are you sure you have the correct one (thread and pitch)...for the bolt?...also sometimes the bolts are extremely hard to start after a coil is installed...did you follow all the instructions that came with the coil?...are u using glue when installing ...(they make a special substance to hold coils in dissimilar metals....used mainly for Cadillac 4.6 head bolt coils)
