Wind Power - A Benefit Or Destroyer?
As fossil fuels get more rare individuals are looking for different ways to produce their own power. A home wind mill is one of the main topics individuals are checking out for their home. However, wind is one of the most natural destroyers but also can be extremely beneficial by converting the wind into energy we can use. Countries are starting to see how they can harness that power and turn it into energy for their homes. Wind power is essentially the conversion of wind energy into electricity. According to the World Wind Energy Report of 2008, wind power put out 1.5% of the worlds electricity usage and is still rising immensely. Since 2005 it has doubled!
Wind energy as a power source is great as an substitute to fossil fuel because of many reasons. First, the source of the energy is plentiful. With wind there is an limitless amount of it and also it is widely distributed so individuals are able to get it anywhere around the globe. Plus, wind is a renewable power source that is clean in that it doesn’t put out any greenhouse gas emissions against the environment. Still, the barrier with wind is it not being consistent in one location all the time. It has its burst times and then sometimes there isn’t any air blowing. It’s said that because so much power is generated by higher wind speeds most of the energy is produced during the short burst times. For example, a sample was done in 2002 by Lee Ranch and it said they got half of their energy during 15% of the time the wind turbines were in operation.
Compared with other energy sources, such as fossil fuels, the environmental effects of wind power are relatively small. Wind power is good in the fact that it doesn't create any pollution and can produce energy without fuel. Individuals are now starting to see the benefits of this and are building windmills at their residences to get off the dependency of the power company. An excellent benefit is that windmills can be attached to the local grid. So people can utilize that for their storage of the power and displacing bought power with local production when it’s accessible. Houses are able to be off the grid and use batteries or photovoltaic systems to keep the energy produced. Residences are able then to keep the energy until it is needed.
People are starting now to search for different ways of constructing their own home wind turbine. Home owners need to first check to see which model would work best for their home. There is either the horizontal axis or the vertical axis windmill. Vertical axis would be best for homes that may have obstacles in the way since that design creates energy with little wind versus a horizontal axis. But as windmills become popular the cost to build one will continue to drop making it affordable for everyone. To learn more on how to build a windmill take a look at this online resource.
