Koi Are Pricey - Learn How to Winterize Your Koi Pond
Winter is on the way, and if you have just built your Koi fishpond this will be the first time that your Koi have had to make it through those lengthy winter months. Think of Winter as a down period for your pond, as less events happen during Winter than any other time. You do need it take some special precautions though so that you can make sure the survival of your fishpond and fish.
Clean Up- Spend an entire weekend wholly going over your pond. Clean up any unwanted bulk material in and around your fishpond. Inside your fishpond, clean up all leaves, silt, and other material from the bottom. Take out any of the flowers or plants in your pond that won't survive winter. Cleaned up all of the rubbish that is around your pond which could end up blowing into it, as this is most likely going to be looked over during the winter months and won't be noticed again until spring. By taking this time and removing this rubbish, you're helping to remove the possibility of potential bacteria and parasites damage from happening.
Stop Feeding- This is a very vital thing, then do not forget that you must not give food to your Koi during the winter. As the temperatures start to drop, and get around 55 or 60°F, you only want to give food to the fish one time a day. Once the temperatures drop below fifty degree for the first time, stop feeding totally. You might think that it's okay to give food to your fish when the temperature rises above 50° again, but don't. The majority of Koi, when healthy and the temperature is above 50 degrees, take at least 4 days to totally digest food. If you mistakenly feed your fish to late the food will not digest and will end up killing your fish. You also need to realize that when a Koi is opening its mouth to you it doesn't necessarily mean that it is hungry. This is just something that they do out of habit and reflex more than hunger. If you are worried about starting your fish, take into consideration that the food that you give them is not all that they eat, specially if your pond has any type of plant life in it. If they get hungry and you're not giving them food, they will eat the stuff.
Check Up- Doing a seasonal check up on your fishpond equipment is vital. This includes everything from your filtration system to your store of preventable medications. During those extended winter months it can be a little more difficult to come up with these pond supplies as a lot of carriers don't keep them on their shelves during this time. You also need to make sure that you have an emergency kit ready and up-to-date. This kit needs to include your water testing kits, bags, nets, and any of the medications necessary.
Be Prepared for the Cold Weather- Try to make preparations for the cold winter months by getting everything you need during the summer months. Quite can withstand temperatures that are constant at 39°, and perhaps even a little bit lower for short time periods. When buying a heater, remember to research what size you will need to adequately heat your pond during the winter, otherwise ice will still form, causing potentially dangerous amounts of gas in the water, due to it being trapped under the ice. In extreme events, it may be a good idea to have an emergency tank inside available.
Turn Off All Water Sources- In temperatures that are extremely cold, your heater will have to labor extremely hard to maintain the water temperature that will keep your fish alive. You need to make sure that you turn off any of your water features such as streams are waterfalls, which cause constant water movement. These features will circulate water, and constantly bring new, and cold water into your pond. You'll be cutting down on the labor that your heater will have to do by turning off these features.
I hope you can understand now how imperative it is that you prepare your koi pond for your Koi now before winter hits. Many species of Koi are extremely expensive, and it is very appropriate and wise for you to want to protect them. Can someone translate English to Latin for me?
I was wondering if someone could translate "Live Open Die Free" in Latin? It can be written different ways like: Live open and die free, to live openly is to die freely, which ever is easiest. Preferably I would like just the Live Open, Die Free. It's for my next tattoo and I was hoping someone could translate it for me since, where I live doesn't offer a class for Latin.
Vive apperte, morere libere!

I’m sorry that all the pro-Ryno Cubs fans aren’t going to get their wish, but
it is time to put the Kleenex box away and start putting a little more faith
and trust towards Epstein and his crew.
